IWS 2024 ANNUAL MEETING

By All IWS Info, IWS Annual Meeting, Region - Eastern, Region - Northern, Region - Southcentral, Region - Southeast, Region - Southwest

IWS 2024 ANNUAL MEETING
Friday, September 13 & Saturday, September 14

LOCATION – Riverside Hotel & Resort
2900 W. Chinden Blvd.
Garden City, Idaho

THEME – CREATIVITY IGNITED

AGENDA

Friday, September 13
9:30am – 11:30am

Creative Calm: Finding Balance in Artistic Endeavors

Presenter Terra Feast is a Professional Development Manager for Boise State’s
Extended Studies and an adjunct professor of art education.

Terra will share research that supports how developing and maintaining creative
practices can yield a wealth of benefits, from personal enrichment to community
engagement: and how the pursuit of perfection can diminish those returns.

Participants will learn first-hand about artmaking experiences that are relaxing,
enjoyable, and contribute to their well-being. As part of this session, participants
will be guided through an easy, low-risk creative exercise to bring
awareness to the mental and physical experience of making art.

Lunch on your own

1:00pm – 4:00pm
Sketch-Booking & Sketch-Noting Workshop

This workshop will be led by Connie Pepper, IWS South Central Regional
Director. She has won numerous local, regional, and statewide awards. Her
work is currently being shown in galleries across Idaho.

Sketch-booking: learn to use a daily sketchbook to experiment and practice
painting, drawing, doodling, collage – indoors and outside.

Sketch-noting: Learn to take visual sketch-notes when in a workshop or
class. Also, discover ways to map travels and experiences in a sketchbook with
sketch-notes. Illustrate with sketch-notes while journaling.

A supply list will be sent to all who sign up for the workshop.

5:30pm – Social Gathering
Dinner on your own

Saturday, September 14
9:30am – 12:30pm

New & Creative Substrates for Watercolor

Laurie Johnson and Joni Frey, both Distinguished Merit members of IWS
will present options beyond paper.

They will be sharing ideas on different substrates to experiment with (paper, Yupo,
Masonite, canvas, illustration board, to name a few). Also, some examples of
each…particularly how you can use gesso to take the worry out of “ruining”
expensive paper with a botched painting.  If you have painted on a unique
substrate and would be interested in showing your process, please give Laurie a
call BEFORE the workshop and talk it over with her (208-215-1588).

Lunch on your own

2:00pm – 4:30pm
Feedback Forum

Your Regional Directors: Jennifer Von Bergen, Connie Pepper, Les Scott, Cali
Ward, and Exhibition Chairman, Scott Muscolo will take the lead and include
their own colorful commentary.

This informal critique will be a fun opportunity to share your work with IWS
members across the State and get valuable feedback. Plus, it is a great
opportunity to experience the creativity of your fellow artists.

5:30 – 6:45
Annual Banquet

7:00 – 8:15
Annual Meeting and Election of Officers

Since the board determined it is in the best interest of the organization to stagger
our officer terms, the only position on the ballot this year will be that of a new Vice
President.

Annual Meeting Agenda and Ballot will be sent out shortly.

Voting will be electronic, same as last year.

Annual Meeting Reservations Deadline – Friday September 6th

Attention: Chris Stubbs Workshop Attendees

By Annual Workshop, Workshops

Hello IWS Membership—specifically those who attended the Chris Stubbs workshop at the Riverside Hotel in June:

I gave several of you hot-pressed and cold-pressed pages from two blocks of watercolor paper generously donated to us by Michael Marchetta of Jerry’s Artarama.

I asked that those of you to whom I gave the paper relate back to me how you rate the quality of the paper.

If you have used the paper, I’d appreciate hearing how you liked it so I can report back to Michael.  If you have not yet used it, no worries, but when you do I’d like to hear about it.

Our responses to Michael and Jerry’s Artarama will influence his/their interest in working with our society positively, and his generosity deserves our attention.

Thanks very much, that’s all for now!

Be well and keep those brushes damp,

Scott

2024 Annual Juried Membership Exhibition Special Announcement

By Annual IWS Location, Annual Juried Exhibition

Greetings IWS members:

First, I want to thank all of you who contributed in any way to our 2024 Annual Juried Membership Exhibition.  It was a tremendous success and showcased the depth of talent embodied by our organization.

There are so many people to thank, but I’d like to particularly thank:

  • Carol HasBrouck Browning, whose seemingly endless store of energy and drive contributed so much to the show’s success,
  • Chris Stubbs our Juror, who did yeoman’s duty in jurying a field of excellent work and held a very successful, well-attended, and much-appreciated workshop,
  • Cynthia Bowman, who endured my relentless micromanagement and produced the finest catalog we’ve ever had as a watercolor society (I mailed the catalogs to the each of you yesterday and today),
  • Sandra Davis, Art and Special Events Director from the Riverside Water’s Edge Gallery, who beautifully curated the works and worked diligently to support us and professionally display the paintings throughout the hotel,
  • and to my wife Shaun who secured a record number of awards from our donor base and tirelessly nudged them until they contributed to our cause.

The most important Thank You is to you, the membership, for the avalanche of spectacular works that filled the hallways of the Riverside Hotel in Boise.

We had a total of 92 paintings gracing the walkways of the hotel, with 28 excellent works not juried as part of the exhibit proper.

At least 5 paintings sold from the Water’s Edge Gallery.  Congratulations to Ying Peng, Hugh Mossman, Marina Zavalova, Thomas Fennell (Tom sold two), and I am probably missing one and I apologize if I have.  Even 5 is unprecedented in a single show at the first venue.

All of the award winners should by now have received their packages.

As a final reminder, the pick-up date for paintings not in the travel show is Monday, July 1 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  For those of you who shipped paintings and have not arranged for individual pick-up, I will be re-boxing your paintings in their original packaging and returning to you as quickly as I can.  I will email you the receipt for the shipping, for which you can reimburse the IWS c/o Dennis Hayzlett, Treasurer, at the address in your membership directory.

The travel show will be crated that day as well, and picked up for delivery to Twin Falls on Tuesday July 2.  From there the travel show will go to Idaho Falls, Pocatello, and back to me for distribution back to the artists in early November.

We are lucky to have Lewiston back in our lineup for the travel show in 2025.  We are visiting them in the first week of August to see the venue and meet with the staff there.  It is good to be bringing the travel show back to the northern reaches of our membership.

Here’s looking forward to a great exhibition in 2025, and even with our unequaled success in 2024 I hope it to be even better!

My sincerest thanks to all of you,

Scott

Kuna Arts and History Center’s Call to Artists

By Events, Exhibits

Dear Idaho Watercolor Society members, the following call to artists was received from the City of Kuna Arts & History Center Curator. A link to the Call to Artists Packet Application is at the bottom of the announcement.

Hello,
My name is Leah Torres, I am the Curator for the Kuna Arts and History Center. The Center opened on March 13th of this year and is home to new art and historical exhibits every quarter, an art gallery, and a media room with books and documents available for research. We want this space to be a bastion of arts and history in Kuna, and so I wanted to reach out because we recently released a Call to Artists for exhibitions! There are opportunities for solo, organization, or group shows at the Center and I am looking to disseminate the information packet and application in case some members or your organization would be interested in submitting work. I have attached the information packet and application in this email for convenience. We are accepting applications and all supplementary materials via email, mail, or in person to the City of Kuna Clerk’s office and/or the Kuna Arts and History Center. To be considered for our next quarterly exhibit opening August 21st, submissions would need to be in by July 25th at 5:00PM, but submissions will still be accepted on an ongoing basis for later shows afterwards.
I am just looking to reach out and start a relationship with artists and artist organizations so that the community can get involved and experience the arts, as well as offer an opportunity to artists to display their artwork. If this is something the Idaho Watercolor Society or its members are interested in, please let me know! Thank you so much for your time.
I look forward to hearing from you,

Leah Torres

All IWS members who have paintings hanging in the Riverside Hotel Water’s Edge Gallery (NOT part of the travel show) please come to the Sapphire Room entrance on Monday, July 1, and meet in the Emerald Room for your painting pick-up between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.

There will be several of us there to sign your painting out.

Shipped paintings will be repackaged in the original packing materials, put in the original shipping box, and returned to you via UPS.  We have a “customer center” here in Boise which is less expensive than the UPS stores with which you may be familiar.

Scott will ship your painting to you and will email you the receipt.  Please send your check for the shipping to Dennis Hayzlett at:

IWS c/o Dennis Hayzlett
2044 E Lamar Ct.
Boise, ID  83712

Please let Scott know if you plan to have someone from your region pick up your painting for hand delivery.

For those of you whose painting will be part of the travel show, they will return to Scott sometime in early November.  If you are not local, he will re-package your work and ship it as described above.  Otherwise you’ll be notified by phone or email (or both) and we’ll arrange a time for you to pick up your painting from:

3640 N Pankratz Way
