IWS Workshop Entrants

By Annual Workshop
Dear IWS Members,
These are the members from whom we have received requests for inclusion into the Annual Workshop in June. Please check that if you notified us, we have your name down and have the correct email. Please note that we have 27 signed up and only have room for 22, so we will do a lottery on this Thursday.  Last year, we had enough late cancellations that everyone on the waiting list eventually got in, so if you end up on the waiting list, all is not lost.

2024 Idaho Watercolor Society Annual Workshop

By Annual Workshop

2024 Idaho Watercolor Society Annual Workshop

June 4th to June 6th                Riverside Hotel – Laurel Room

Realistic Watercolor Techniques with

Kathleen S. Giles

~AWS, NWS-M, TWSA, AWA, PWS, NFWS, WHS

____________________________________________________

This class will explore the importance of value and composition. We will use a unified color scheme and texture to create a three-dimensional look. Using a limited palette, Kathleen will demonstrate the mixing of triads and explain the importance of grays. Mixtures can be altered by the ratio of warm to cool color that enhances the glow of the final painting. Working at a manageable size with larger shapes will allow students to do two paintings during the 3-day class. The class starts with a short slide show and Kathleen will discuss choosing reference photos. Each morning and afternoon will begin with a demonstration with plenty of personal one-on-one attention. Critique will take place at the end of each day. Wet-into-wet, wet-on-dry, glazing techniques and dry brush will be demonstrated and explained.

Students will learn:

~how to show the contours of subject matter using hard and soft edges

~to read values correctly and alter them when necessary

~create depth with layered glazes and texture

~how to use neutrals for balance and depth

~create unity by mixing grays and blacks and shown how to lift out lost hi-lights or brighten areas when needed.

Students will receive a palette and supply list. The reference photos and an introductory video from Kathleen will be sent to all registered

students about 5 weeks before the workshop.

Level of student: Some previous watercolor experience needed

Artists statement/bio

“My art has become such an all-encompassing force in my life that I am always involved in some aspect of it. I am drawn to subjects that are filled with color and dramatic lighting.

They can be beautiful but often have an underlying story. My work captures a moment in time. I strive to draw the viewer into my visual narrative and to create an emotional response. For me, realism is the best way to do that. My teaching has allowed me to meet and work with wonderful artists from all around the world. I value those relationships that have enriched my life so much.” – Kathleen

Kathleen’s primary discipline is watercolor and her realistic portrayal of everyday life has won her many awards. She is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, a Master Signature of the National Watercolor Society, the Transparent Watercolor Society, American Women Artists, Women In Watercolor, the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society and the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society. The artist is a member of the International Guild of Realism and an elected member of the Allied Artists of America.

The artist’s work is defined by strong values and intense colors on a variety of subjects. She travels the U.S. to teach workshops, in-person and online.

  1. If you would like to enter this workshop, email both [email protected] and [email protected].  If you don’t receive a confirmation of your entry, contact us.  If we should receive more entries than the 24 places available, we will do a lottery after a couple weeks, February 15th.  This is an effort to be fairer in case there are those who are out of cell range when this call goes out.
  2. The cost is $425.
  3. If we have not received your entry fee and money (check made out to IWS) by April 1st, your spot will go to another. Before April 1st, cancellations will receive a full refund.  After April 1st, moneys received will be refunded if there is someone to take your place on the waiting list. Or you may find your own replacement.
  4. The workshop will go from 9am until 4pm June 4th through June 6th.
  5. Lunches will be provided each day. Morning coffee, tea, water will be available.
  6. Location is Riverside Inn, 2900 W Chinden Blvd, Garden City ID 83714
  7. We will send out a supply list both to confirmed entrants and to wait list people.
  8. Out of towners: There will be a block of rooms available at the Riverside Inn 208-343-1871. The block will be listed under IWS, but that is not yet taken care of.  The IWS state show, awards ceremony, reception, and workshop will all be held at the Riverside Inn, so it will be a very convenient place to stay.  The awards ceremony and reception will be Tuesday the 3th.

IWS Annual workshop – Save the Date

By Annual Workshop
Dear Fellow Artists,

Our annual workshop is approaching!  It will be held June 4-6, at the Riverside Hotel.  We will open registration on February 1 and will be sending out another announcement to remind you.  Please do not send in requests before that.  We will be doing it a little differently this year.  Because some of our entrants’ emails went to spam, or the registrant didn’t see our announcement, it will not be first come – first served.  This year we will keep registration open for a couple of weeks, then if there are more than 22, we will do a lottery.

If you would like to see Kathleen Giles’ work, go to her web address, www.kgilesstudio.com

Kathleen does realistic work, and this workshop will be focusing on texture. We have asked that she make landscape her predominant subject matter.

Hope this inspires you!

Attention: Chris Stubbs Workshop Attendees. Request for Information

By Annual Workshop, Workshops

Hello IWS Membership—specifically those who attended the Chris Stubbs workshop at the Riverside Hotel in June:

I gave several of you hot-pressed and cold-pressed pages from two blocks of watercolor paper generously donated to us by Michael Marchetta of Jerry’s Artarama.

I asked that those of you to whom I gave the paper relate back to me how you rate the quality of the paper.

If you have used the paper, I’d appreciate hearing how you liked it so I can report back to Michael.  If you have not yet used it, no worries, but when you do I’d like to hear about it.

Our responses to Michael and Jerry’s Artarama will influence his/their interest in working with our society positively, and his generosity deserves our attention.

Thanks very much, that’s all for now!

Be well and keep those brushes damp,

Scott

2024 Idaho Watercolor Society Annual Workshop
Presented by Chris Stubbs
June 5th to June 7th
http://chrisstubbsart.com

Chris has been painting in watercolor since she was 16 years old—with a lot of breaks—while she was raising children and being the wife of a (now retired) career Navy pilot. Resuming painting while they were stationed in San Diego, Chris has worked at perfecting her lifelong passion of painting people. She also enjoys painting flowers, animals, and all things authored by the heart of our Creator God.

Painting the beauty of our creation is important to her. In our sometimes crazy world, Chris believes that beauty cries out for the world to see and to taste and be believed.

She paints mainly in transparent watercolor. Often considered the most difficult of the painting media, watercolor has a distinctive ability to allow light to shine through the paint in a transparent manner, when painted on white paper. And because water is the carrier, the colors have a unique ability to blend in ways that no other medium can do. This brings a feeling of “light” into her paintings.

Chris holds Signature membership in the National Watercolor Society, Northwest Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, and Watercolor Society of Oregon and served as President of the Watercolor Society of Oregon in 2019. She has won numerous awards including two Best in Show awards and five People’s Choice Awards in the Watercolor Society of Oregon Shows.
