2024 Idaho Watercolor Society Annual Workshop

By Annual Workshop

2024 Idaho Watercolor Society Annual Workshop

June 4th to June 6th                Riverside Hotel – Laurel Room

Realistic Watercolor Techniques with

Kathleen S. Giles

~AWS, NWS-M, TWSA, AWA, PWS, NFWS, WHS

____________________________________________________

This class will explore the importance of value and composition. We will use a unified color scheme and texture to create a three-dimensional look. Using a limited palette, Kathleen will demonstrate the mixing of triads and explain the importance of grays. Mixtures can be altered by the ratio of warm to cool color that enhances the glow of the final painting. Working at a manageable size with larger shapes will allow students to do two paintings during the 3-day class. The class starts with a short slide show and Kathleen will discuss choosing reference photos. Each morning and afternoon will begin with a demonstration with plenty of personal one-on-one attention. Critique will take place at the end of each day. Wet-into-wet, wet-on-dry, glazing techniques and dry brush will be demonstrated and explained.

Students will learn:

~how to show the contours of subject matter using hard and soft edges

~to read values correctly and alter them when necessary

~create depth with layered glazes and texture

~how to use neutrals for balance and depth

~create unity by mixing grays and blacks and shown how to lift out lost hi-lights or brighten areas when needed.

Students will receive a palette and supply list. The reference photos and an introductory video from Kathleen will be sent to all registered

students about 5 weeks before the workshop.

Level of student: Some previous watercolor experience needed

Artists statement/bio

“My art has become such an all-encompassing force in my life that I am always involved in some aspect of it. I am drawn to subjects that are filled with color and dramatic lighting.

They can be beautiful but often have an underlying story. My work captures a moment in time. I strive to draw the viewer into my visual narrative and to create an emotional response. For me, realism is the best way to do that. My teaching has allowed me to meet and work with wonderful artists from all around the world. I value those relationships that have enriched my life so much.” – Kathleen

Kathleen’s primary discipline is watercolor and her realistic portrayal of everyday life has won her many awards. She is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, a Master Signature of the National Watercolor Society, the Transparent Watercolor Society, American Women Artists, Women In Watercolor, the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society and the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society. The artist is a member of the International Guild of Realism and an elected member of the Allied Artists of America.

The artist’s work is defined by strong values and intense colors on a variety of subjects. She travels the U.S. to teach workshops, in-person and online.

IWS Annual workshop – Save the Date

By Annual Workshop
Dear Fellow Artists,

Our annual workshop is approaching!  It will be held June 4-6, at the Riverside Hotel.  We will open registration on February 1 and will be sending out another announcement to remind you.  Please do not send in requests before that.  We will be doing it a little differently this year.  Because some of our entrants’ emails went to spam, or the registrant didn’t see our announcement, it will not be first come – first served.  This year we will keep registration open for a couple of weeks, then if there are more than 22, we will do a lottery.

If you would like to see Kathleen Giles’ work, go to her web address, www.kgilesstudio.com

Kathleen does realistic work, and this workshop will be focusing on texture. We have asked that she make landscape her predominant subject matter.

Hope this inspires you!

In case you have been delaying signing up, now is the time. April 9, 10, 11. This is a great opportunity to learn watercolor techniques from an expert. He even gives you the option of doing landscapes on Day 1.

Class Description

The Enlightened Brush

Ken Call shares his passion for portraits and figures in his unique watercolor style. Learn how he takes advantage of their ability to convey a mood, be spontaneous and still have the needed tightness to capture the proper likeness. Based on an intimate dance of light and color, Ken will show you how to bring your paintings to life while using your own personal vision and experiences. Comprehensive portrait and figure painting will be featured in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. You will have the opportunity to work with your own personal favorite subject matter as well as reference photos provided by the instructor.

There will be daily demos and plenty of one-on-one instruction for all who desire. Ken will in addition make available to the class his reference to paint from if they so desire. At the end of each day, you will have the opportunity to share your work with Ken and the class for review and discussion.  You are encouraged to bring several samples of your work to share with Ken for feedback.

Day 1 Instructor demo and students paint their choice of any subject (landscape, portrait, etc)
Day 2 Instructor demo and focus on portraits or figures — (Ken provides reference photo)
